Few things gladden my heart more than a proper Afternoon Tea with all the trimmings, or High Tea as we South Africans call it. (It’s actually correctly called Afternoon Tea, but we’ll let that lie for now.) There’s something inherently soothing about sitting down to a lavish spread of sweet and savoury dainties, civilised conversation and tea, of course, with a glass of bubbly or two to sweeten the experience.
I was delighted to join a media group at Cellars-Hohenort recently for probably one of the finest Afternoon Tea experiences of my life. Astonishingly well-priced at R245 pp, it’s a feast fit for royalty. Big bonus is that they offer a fully vegan or gluten-free version too, so you can indulge to heart’s content.
Imagine savoury treats such as roasted vegetable & goat’s cheese tarts, and grass-fed beef & peppadew sosaties, followed by an array of sweet delights including Classic Madagascan chocolate cake, a mélange of flavoured cupcakes and fresh fruit pavlovas – not to forget the traditional finger sandwiches.
The high tea includes fine selection of fragrant teas and coffees – and you may want to add a celebratory glass of bubbly!
Served daily in the Sun Lounge, on the Conservatory Terrace or in the Palm Arch, the High Tea is perfect for a wide range of special occasions, from birthdays, hen parties, baby showers and ‘Sip & See’ meet-the-new-baby afternoons, to corporate events. Special dietary requirements are catered for but need to be booked 24 hours in advance.
