It’s harvest season in the Cape Winelands and amidst the hard work, a festive spirit prevails. On 28 January the annual Stellenbosch Harvest Parade takes to the streets, filling the air with sounds of joyous celebration.
The oak-lined streets of Stellenbosch will host throngs of festive community members, united by cameraderie to parade on uniquely adorned âchariotsâ on Saturday, January 28. The annual Harvest Parade comes to this prominent town of South African wine to usher in the grape harvest season with convivial cheer.
The memorable Stellenbosch Harvest Parade also pays homage to the people behind this labour of love and especially the invaluable contribution of South Africaâs farm workers. This proud Stellenbosch procession traditionally includes merry marching bands, Cape minstrels, drum majorettes and – the highlight of this harvest high jinks â a flotilla of bold and beautifully decorated tractors, trailer and trucks. The troupe represents participating wineries and will meander its way through the streets to bring unique Stellenbosch gees (spirit) to the seasonâs toil.
Sounds like fun? Of course it is!
âOur Harvest Parade recognises the work of thousands of men and women responsible for sustaining the wine industry in Stellenbosch,â says Stellenbosch Wine Routes Manager Elmarie Rabe. âAt the same time, it marks the start of the grape-picking seasonâs hustle-and-bustle that will again yield the award-winning wines responsible for making Stellenbosch world-renowned. Just to see the colourful convoy of big smiles and bright tractors gives one goose-bumps. And it makes me tremendously proud to be part of such a wonderful winemaking region and heart-warming tradition,â she adds.
The Stellenbosch Harvest Parade is a celebration of the very essence of a vibrant and eclectic âStelliesâ and should not be missed. Among the participating wineries that will set out to paint the town red in their own unique way are Simonsig, Lanzerac, Waterford, LâAvenir, Eikendal, Alto, Neethlinghof, Kleine Zalze Wines, Hill & Dale and Delheim.
âShow me a product made by many peopleâs hard work, sweat and knowledge that can be enjoyed now or after a decade amongst friends and family, and still leave one amazed by the flavours and taste,â declares Delheim winemaker Altus Treurnicht.
âFor me, the Harvest Parade highlights how the making of wine begins long before fruit arrives at the cellar and wine goes into the bottle. The occasion reflects the vibe and excitement for harvest and what the new vintage will bring us.â
Happy days!
The Stellenbosch Harvest Parade, presented in conjunction with the Stellenbosch Municipality, gets underway on 28 January from 9am. It will be followed by a harvest blessing ceremony at the town hall in Plein Street at 10am. It signals the start of the Stellenbosch Wine Festival presented by Pick ân Pay, which takes place at the Coetzenburg sports grounds from 24 to 26 February.

âStellenbosch has a recipe for living that is hard to resist or come by. With these street parties we offer visitors a taste of our way of life through quality wines, delicious bites and live music. I cannot imagine a better way to spend a balmy summerâs evening, let alone better company to share it with,â shares Elmarie Rabe, Manager of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes.

It goes down from 18h00 to 20h00 and each event features a different selection of cellars and food vendors. R70 gets you a glass to taste as many wines as you wish. Harvest Festivals are traditionally a way of saying thanks for blessings and abundance and at Delheim this year, spirits are running high. Devastated by fire a year ago, it is particularly poignant that Delheim is rising like a phoenix from the ashes in 2017 to celebrate Start of Harvest once again.
Press release received from Random Hat PR shares the good news:
Delheimâs annual Start of Harvest Festival is back! After a devastating fire on the Simonsberg Mountain put a cork in the event for 2016, it has been re-kindled with vigour and exciting changes. Now is the time book out the family calendar for January 28 and 29, when Delheim Start of Harvest Festival returns.
The event at the celebrated Stellenbosch wine farm is among the first to usher in the grape-picking seasonâs hustle-and-bustle. This is the time that farms across the winelands prepare to bring in the fruit; a time of joy after year-long toil and tending the vines. âThe fire that swept through this area forced us to cancel the event last year, but weâre back â better and stronger,â says Delheim Destination Manager Charlotte Terblanche. âIn fact, our regulars have been champing at the bit so if youâre planning to come, best book early.â
Once again, the ever-popular grape stomping is back. It is an ancient tradition across the world thatâs symbolic of the fellowship of wine and guaranteed to ignite the fun. There will be live music and lawn games, too.
This time however, brave participants and eager observers will light up with enthusiasm for Delheimâs new barrel-rolling races â a laugh-a-minute and certainly not as easy as you might think.
As for the food, the harvest table format has been revamped. The feast is still on, but there will be even greater diversity and the opportunity to taste the eminent suitability of Delheim wines with food. Vegetarian options will be provided as well as a stand for dessert and an ice-cream truck.
Make Delheim Start of Harvest Festival your first date of 2017 and share in a slow and delicious, peaceful and dreamy weekend of endless family fun.
Entrance is R100 pp and R80 for children. Your ticket includes all the entertainment on the day; a Delheim wine glass; freshly pressed grape juice and a sweet âmosbolletjieâ on arrival;Â plus free kids activities to keep the little ones busy. The festival is from 12h00 until 5pm on both days.
For more information or to book, contact the estateâs Garden Restaurant on tel: 021 888 4607 or send an email to restaurant@delheim.com.
Delheim Estate is located in the Simonsberg sub-region of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes, on the Knorhoek Road, off the R44.
The hottest new culinary ticket in town is also the freshest one. At brand-spanking new Chefs restaurant in Gardens, chef Jenny Ward and her crew deliver food so fresh it seems to vibrate with vitality. Don’t believe me? Go check it out.
Chefs, the new concept restaurant from which chef Jenny operates, is located in premises at 81 St John’s Road, Gardens. That particular site has seen many previous tenants come and go and has probably crushed more hearts and bank balances than any other business premises I know of. So it was with some trepidation I set off today to experience Chefs‘ food firsthand. ‘Please let it be good, please let it be good,’ I inwardly prayed, because it would just be unbearable to see another business bruised and doomed to fail in that awkward space. Yes, my expectations were low.
And whoa…I arrive at the freshly painted store, step inside and I am floored. Jaw, meet floor. Not only has Chefs taken over and remodelled this former ugly duckling of a store, they totally own the space. More than a breath of fresh air, Chefs has given the space the kiss of life and resurrected it into something so pure and beautiful it’s like going to a food spa or a modern kitchen temple. Or something. I dunno, it just seems like a spiritual experience to eat at Chefs: the essential Zen of fresh. Which is the millennial spirit, isn’t it? It’s fun, too, so don’t expect a high attitude or priestly piousness. This is food in a space meant to be all about fun and pleasure.
Place fits practice hand in glove. In fact, I haven’t seen a business concept fit its premises so perfectly in a long, long, time. Not only does Chefs make the space work, it seems to be an organic, intrinsic part of the core trade. Which is fresh food, served fast without frills. Which doesn’t mean it ain’t serious cooking. It is. You just won’t notice the machinery at work, and that’s where the genius lies.
The space is completely transformed, inside and out. Airy, fresh, bright and clear, the white tiled walls and vast picture windows provide the best lighting of any restaurant in town. So perfect is the lighting, it makes everyone inside look beautiful. As in radiantly beautiful. Yes, go there and see what I mean. Everyone should have their photo taken inside Chefs. Selfie HQ!
Or perhaps everyone I saw there today had simply been eating chef Jenny’s food for a long time, because it certainly makes you feel all lit up and mighty fine inside. (They opened in October 2016.)
Chefs is exactly what I love about food right now: no-attitude fresh, simple, nourishing and pure; taking the very best ingredients and doing just enough to them to turn it into edible magic – cooking done with joy and love in a space that soothes the senses. Jenny does all that and more.
Here is a chef like few other: obsessed with freshness and flavour, Jenny seems to have an instinctive, intuitive understanding of texture + flavour + colour. Her plates are alive with colour, offset by the pure white interior and utterly simple decor which is no decor, just space.
My son and I were guests of the restaurant today, and we were both blown away by our food. There are only four choices every day, and you place your order on an iPad at the front desk. Once seated, your food is brought to your table by a chef on clever little moulded metal trays; each indent holding a bowl of dip, sauce or salsa, and a salad. The price per dish includes substantial sides and garnishes, so it’s a filling meal. Choose still or sparkling water, or pay extra for fresh juices. The coffee is superb.
My son had the duo of duck, served atop of tangle of shredded vegetables in a light vinaigrette, and I had the sublime harissa fish with smoked fish croquettes on a bed of olives and roasted tomatoes. A side salad of soft-boiled egg and paper-thin fennel with rocket was dressed in a tangy vinaigrette, and I also had a salsa of roasted sweet peppers and tomato plus what seemed to be a tartare sauce. Very filling yet very refreshing at the same time. The flavour combinations reminded me of the Moro cookbooks, with a hint of smokiness, sweetness and tartness popping up here and there. Delicious!
With only four dishes every day to prepare, you might imagine a certain dullness to creep in, or even expect boredom. Far from it: each dish with its accompaniments absolutely zings with flavour. If a plate could sing Hallelujah, it would be at Chefs. Perfection is required and perfection is delivered. Such pared-down simplicity leaves chef Jenny nowhere to hide behind frills and frippery and she knows it, taking advantage of the challenge instead by executing neat little harmonies and sassy riffs of flavour and textures. Here is the chef who smiles while she works, because she knows. She knows.
I’ll admit I love it. Really, I do. I haven’t been this excited about a new restaurant in Cape Town in a long time, and that’s saying something.
If you want to experience it for yourself, please take time to read the press release about this fascinating and exciting new restaurant below, and then make your booking! First, some photos of our food today:
Designed for people on the go, Chefs is a disruptive offering that aims to solve the problem of accessing great food without needing to spend hours sitting down in a top restaurant. There are no printed menus. Instead, daily website updates show which three meals are available that day. There are no waiters. You order and pay on arrival via an iPad, take a seat at a table, and a Chef will appear swiftly with your plated meal on the signature Chefâs tray.
The result is something incredibly fresh and uplifting. Everything that could stand between you and the meal has been removed. You are paying for good food and nothing else. The kitchen is inseparable from the seating area and thereâs no sense of remove between product and patron. Chefs is all about getting people to connect with food by removing the barriers between the Chef and customer and making the kind of meals that everyone wants to eat – super fresh, healthy, generously served and stylishly presented. The foodie capital of Cape Town is the launching pad for this first flagship concept, which, if successful, will be rolled out both locally and internationally. Chefs is a platform for exposing culinary talent and will be on the hunt for rising Chefs to head up each of these new ventures.
Chefs is the brainchild of Justin Letschert, the man behind the globally successful skincare brand Bio-Oil. He had no intention of being involved in the food industry but once he had the idea, simply had to see it through. To help manifest the idea, he roped in his friend, Adam Whiteman, of Mother City hotspots The Power and The Glory and Hallelujah, as well as Chef Jenny Ward and MD Campbell Stevenson. So now, what started off as a mere idea two years ago is a game-changing eatery on St Johns Street in Gardens.
âThere is a big gap between what you can get at a top restaurant and what you can get when you are in a rush. Chefs aims to fill that gap,â says Letschert. âWe went around in circles for some time trying to figure out how to merge the excellence of Chef-created food with speed and a non-fussy approach. Then Adam came up with the idea of the customised tray to move everything through the kitchen and on to the table. That was the Eureka moment!â
Chefsâ menu is directed by Ward, a master of wood-fired cooking with a passion for preparing honest food, using simple traditional techniques with raw ingredients from her selection of carefully sourced suppliers. Having achieved a cum laude qualification from the Institute of Culinary Arts, Jennyâs culinary experiences include cooking in top-rated restaurants, such as Bizerca Bistro in Cape Town, to preparing gourmet cuisine for private jet catering company Par-Avion and celebrity clients like Mariah Carey. Her talented Sous Chef, Jaffarie Sabe, is formerly of Ellerman House and also cheffed at Bizerca, which is where this kitchen duo first met.
The barrier-less kitchen allows customers uninterrupted visual access to all the food prepping and assembling â not forgetting the constant view of flames from the brass-fronted oven. Large, open windows allow plenty of natural light and highlight the stripped back, honest aesthetic. A long strip of tables takes centre stage, encouraging an atmosphere of patron interaction and the simple enjoyment of excellently prepared meals. Considered and astonishing details â like the blue Chefs tape as a recurring leit motif – add spark to the pared back design concept.
You can choose what you want to eat before you arrive, as the three meal options of the day are uploaded to the website, which can be viewed at www.chefscapetown.co.za. Chefs is open Monday to Friday from 12pm to 4pm with plans to extend trading hours until 8pm at a later stage. Chefs is located at 81 St Johnâs Street in Gardens, Cape Town. Reservations are not necessary.

I haven’t been to heaven, but I’ve been to Anthonij Rupert Wine Estate – and it’s the same thing to me, really. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been and the mere thought of it is enough to put me in a good mood instantly.
This sprawling estate just outside Franschhoek offers food and wine lovers a wealth of indulgent experiences from wine tasting, Italian cheese and wine pairing, afternoon tea and bubbly to delicious hot and cold antipasti. The latter is served in the Terra del Capo Antipasto Bar, made fresh daily by chef HW Pieterse and his crew.  Afternoon tea with dainty cakes and pastries  are served up at the manor house, where wines can also be bought and tasted. The Italian cheese pairing serves 5 cheeses with 4 wines and is served upstairs at the Terra del Capo Tasting Room. To cap it all, you can have a tasting of the estate’s three glorious L’Ormarins Cap Classiques in the rose garden behind the manor house. Days of wine and roses? It doesn’t get better than this, my friend.
Apart from these sublime culinary treats, there is also the magnificent Franschhoek Motor Museum, where a rotating selection of vintage and modern classic cars are displayed in immaculate condition. A tram takes one on an ambling ride around the estate; a fabulous way to drink in the spectacular views of the valley and towering mountains all around.
Anthonij Rupert Wyne was founded on the farm LâOrmarins in Franschhoek. Originally owned by the late Anthonij Rupert, the farm was taken over by his brother Johann Rupert in 2003 and the company renamed after him. Johann Rupert constructed a state-of-the-art winemaking facility, catapulting the farm into a prestigious wine estate and sprawling enterprise.
Just look at the benefits of joining the wine club:
Discounts on purchases, exclusive member offers, free tastings, free entry to the motor museum and a whole lot more.
You will be issued with a unique wine club number, which on presentation at the estate will entitle you to:

I was recently a guest of the estate to experience the luscious array of treats, kicking off with the cheese and wine pairing upstairs in the Terra del Capo Tasting Room. A day filed firmly under “Lifetime Highlights”, for sure! Here’s what to expect:
Indulge the senses with a delectable Italian Cheese and Wine Tasting at the Terra del Capo Tasting Room. This interactive, fun and educational tasting is presented by one of the Tasting Room assistants, who will take you through the cheese tasting, sharing information about how the cheeses have been made and their places of origin.
The fine cheese selection comprises both local and imported artisanal cheese, made in true Italian style. They range from mild to strong and creamy to grainy, and include well-known cheeses such as Smoked Mozzarella, aged Fontina, and Gorgonzola.
Wine from the food-friendly Terra del Capo range accompanies the cheese tasting to create an authentic Italian taste experience.
* An interactive presentation * Tasting of 4 wines, paired with 5 Italian style cheeses
R45 Franschhoek, Anthonij Rupert Estate
Anthonij Rupert Tasting room
I loved tasting the different wines with various cheeses, with the L’Ormarins Cape LBV 2013 port and gorgonzola match definitely my favourite. Â Selling at only R165, this vintage port will make the perfect Christmas gift, just remember to set aside a bottle or two for your own pleasure too!
Downstairs in the tasting room lobby is a little boutique shop selling decor and homeware covetables like the L’Ormarins extra virgin olive oil, preserves, beautiful glass carafes, L’Ormarins MCC, pretty bowls and nicknacks galore – perfect Xmas stocking fillers. Be prepared to spend a LOT, as there are simply too many irresistible ‘little things you can’t live without’.
Tucked behind the shop is the Antipasto Bar, where chef HW Pieterse and crew dish up some of the best small plates in the Cape. HW’s breads are unsurpassable, and even the most determined Banter will succumb to these gorgeous, crusty loaves. The freshest regional seasonal produce finds its way into chef HW’s dishes, and the menu is compact enough to be ordered in its entirety between a few friends. Cheese and charcuterie platters are also available for sharing.
Some choices to tempt you: from the hot menu – zucchini fries with garlic aĂŻoli, home-made smoked Italian sausages served with caponata, arancini stuffed with fontina and forest mushrooms served with truffle aĂŻoli; crisp fried calamari with lemon aĂŻoli, lamb meatballs and marinara sauce.
Cold antipasti include burrata with grilled asparagus and gremolata butter, and a summery peach & plum caprese salad. Cured estate-raised Angus beef is smoked to order, and Franschhoek salmon trout showcases the quality of local valley ingredients.
Hungry yet? I am!
Sit inside in the intimate, plush bar with a view of the modern bottling line, or relax outside underneath the olive trees for an alfresco dining experience. The views of the landscaped gardens are guaranteed to revive and recharge your spirits.
Follow this up with a tutored wine tasting upstairs and stock up on wine supplies before heading home!
The Terra del Capo Tasting Room and Antipasto Bar are open from Tuesday to Sunday 10h00 – 16h30. For more information, contact the farm on 021 874 9041.
After my Italian cheese and wine tasting experience, I hitched a trip in the estate tram to the manor house for a bubbly tasting in the rose garden, followed by a tea tasting, more bubbly and cake. Feast!
Anthonij Rupert Wyne’s chefs and confectioners are renowned for their High Tea. Freshly-baked scones, pastries, delicate sandwiches as well as delectable Franschhoek smoked salmon blinis are served at the exquisitely set tea tables in the manor house drawing room. Only the finest teas from around the globe are served. Sample menus are available but are subject to change at any time. Because of the exclusivity of this event, bookings are essential.
Anthonij Rupert Tasting Room
Opening hours:Â Mondays to Saturdays, 10h00-17h00.
Included in the tasting is a selection of four teas, presented by the Tasting Room assistants in a fun and educational fashion.
