Delheim Mushroom Forage

Gourmet food and wine experience unearths Mother Nature’s own wild pantry

15, 16, 30 June and 1 July

It’s mushroom time again! Soon, wild mushroom foragers will head into the forests in search of these delicious delicacies that only pop out for a short time in the year and you’ve got the chance to join them too.

Bountiful Harvest! Delheim Fungi Forage

Delheim Estate’s popular Mushroom Forage on 15, 16, 30 June and 1 July will open up the mesmerising world of the fascinating fungi and teach you how to identify, forage and clean your very own, hand-picked mushrooms.

Participants are limited to 40 people per day, which allows Delheim to maintain the delicate balance between sharing a family passion and protecting the environment where the mushrooms appear.

Delheim’s Mushroom Forage was awarded “Highly Commended” in the Best Wine Event category in the Drinks International Wine Tourism Challenge 2017.

It is a phenomenal achievement to be recognized amongst top international wineries so you can be sure you’ll enjoy a high calibre, memorable experience!

These fun(gi) excursions have run annually over a number of years and become hugely popular due to the magical experience as well as the hosts themselves – Delheim’s Nora Sperling-Thiel and Gary “The Mushroom Fundi” Goldman. Both are experienced foragers and talented educators, who lead these ‘silent hunts’ along with the family’s inimitable Jack Russells.

nora sperling thiel fungi delheim sonia cabano blog eatdrinkcapetown
Nora Sperling-Thiel at Delheim Fungi Forage

Nora learned the art of seasonal foraging from her mother and has been collecting mushrooms on their wine farm since she was a child. “Foraging is searching for a little magic,” she says. “You never know if you will find some mushrooms but when you do, it makes you feel as excited as a child.”

The day begins with an enlightening workshop on mushroom identification in the farm’s vat cellar, followed by a short walk to the mushroom hunt in Delheim’s lush pine forest. Foragers will then head for the estate’s Garden Restaurant where Chef Bruce von Pressentin lays on a three-course meal that showcases these flavoursome marvels.

Lunch starts with a trio of starters where various mushrooms are perfectly paired with Delheim wines that your tastebuds will relish. The dishes range from sautéed oysters, pickled shiitake, foie gras parfait with wild mushroom bonbons to baked Valrhona chocolate and porcini teacups.

“It’s an incredible privilege to be able to pick such a delicious ingredient only a short walk from the kitchen to produce stunning, inspired meals. I can’t wait to go out early on a misty morning to forage for mushrooms,” says Bruce.

This unique gourmet food and wine experience is for adults only and costs R695 per person. It includes the informative workshop, mushroom hunt, a tantalising mushroom-themed food and wine experience and a complimentary bottle of wine to enjoy at home.

Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and a warm jacket and should bring their own pocket knife and baskets for the hunt. The events will still take place even if it rains and all the fun starts at 09:30 until 14:30, but book off the rest of your day to make the most of the beautiful, serene surroundings.

Bookings opened on 30 April and all tickets should be booked via Computicket. For more information visit www.delheim.com

IMPORTANT: The appearance of wild mushrooms depends completely on natural phenomena that are impossible to forecast with absolute accuracy, particularly after long periods of drought. Although the Delheim events take place during the high season for wild mushrooms, the estate cannot guarantee the appearance of mushrooms on the day.

Make Friends with a New Red: Jason’s Creek 2015

Jason’s Creek 2015 from Jason’s Hill Winery

Introducing the new look Jason’s Creek – tradition with a bit of edge

Jason’s Creek, a classic Cape Blend, illustrates the story of Jason’s Hill in its revamped label design. The top half of the label represents the heritage of the farm, and the bottom half represents the farm as it is known today.

Not familiar with Jason’s Hill? Here’s what to know:

The heritage and name of the wine dates back to an old shepherd who cared for his flock of sheep in the mountains behind the farm, which is situated in the heart of the Slanghoek Wine Valley. The shepherd’s name was Jason, which is how Jason’s Hill came into being. The label depicts the shepherd and his sheep in the mountains surrounded by flowers. The vineyards on the label represent the farmers who had started planting vines during that time. The bottom half represents the vineyards of today.

dog jason's creek sonia cabano blog eatdrinkcapetown
Enough for everyone: Jason’s Creek 2015 from Jason’s Hill Winery

These vineyards are more prominent on the label, symbolising a thriving and successful estate. The barrels and bottles are also representative of the current ownership. A quirky yet fun element on the label is the resident farm cat, who has become a welcome sight to visitors throughout the years, and who is fondly referred to as Jason.

The eye-catching label is befitting of the recently released Jason’s Creek 2015, described by winemaker Ivy du Toit as smooth and delightfully uncomplicated. (That’s easy-drinking, between you and me.) Made from a blend of Pinotage (50%), Petit Verdot (35%) and Tannat (15%), the wine displays flavours of succulent raspberry, cherry and hints of spice, resulting in well managed tannins. Matured in French oak barrels for 10 months, the wine is ready to drink now, but will reach its full potential if left for a further eight to 12 years. If you can be that patient…

Enjoy on its own during the colder months or serve with succulent roast lamb, pork and even mushroom-based dishes. The wine is also the perfect ingredient for a classic Sangria. The Jason’s Creek 2015 is available directly from the Tasting Room at R70 per bottle or from select outlets nationwide.

Shiraz and Charcuterie at Anthonij Rupert Wine Estate

Shiraz and Charcuterie Festival at Anthonij Rupert Wine Estate 27 May

Two of my favourite things – erm, make that three – are shiraz, charcuterie and, of course, Anthonij Rupert Wine Estate. Combine the three and you’ve got my idea of the perfect day out.

Save the date: Saturday 27 May, 12 – 5 pm. Got that? Good!

From On the Marque PR:

Don’t miss out on sampling some of SA’s finest Shiraz wines at this year’s Shiraz & Charcuterie at Anthonij Rupert Wyne in Franschhoek on Saturday, 27 May (12pm to 5pm). A selection of delicious charcuterie accompanying the Shiraz means the event is guaranteed to be a culinary match made in heaven. (I’ve been before, and this is the gospel truth.)

This is the perfect opportunity to taste Anthonij Rupert Wyne’s range of Shiraz wines, which include the Anthonij Rupert Syrah, the Cape of Good Hope Riebeeksrivier Shiraz and Protea Shiraz. The Protea Shiraz adds that extra allure with its eye-catching, indigenous floral-inspired bottle – ready for upcycling! Accompanying these superb wines will be a selection of our country’s finest Syrahs paired with yummilious charcuterie and other delicious artisanal fare. Participating producers, amongst others, include Rust en Vrede, Waterford, Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, Hartenberg Wine Estate, Simonsig and Thelema. Royalty in the bottle right there, my friend!

Anthonij Rupert Wine Estate Shiraz and Charcuterie Festival 27 May

Ideally suited to colder months, you can savour your glass of Shiraz with one of the hearty, winter-inspired dishes served on the day. Drawing inspiration from the Rhône Valley, food choices include a traditional French Onion Soup and homemade Saucisson served with braised Cannellini Beans. The popular Olive Bar with a selection of the finest artisanal olives to choose from adds that extra touch to the quintessence of a classic food and wine pairing taste sensation.

Pre-booking is essential as tickets are limited. Your tickets, which cost R220 per person, includes entry as well as tastings of the wines on show. Book directly viawww.webtickets.co.za.

Delheim Cape Malay May Feasts: fragrant Butter Chicken with roti’s. Lunch R300 pp

Some press releases are crammed with so much yumminess, I have to close my laptop and walk around for a bit to calm down before sharing. This one, about Delheim Wine Estate’s Cape Malay Lunches in May, is just such a document. Can we say ‘Mmmm?’ Oh yes, and ‘More, please!’, Come, May, come Cape Malay Lunches!

Read:

Delheim goes Cape Malay in May

Fire up winter with a hearty, traditional meal at Cape Winelands iconic estate

 Every Saturday in May: 6, 13, 20, 27

Re-connect with the alluring history of the Cape this winter by joining Delheim, the renowned Stellenbosch wine estate, for its special Cape Malay lunches in May. Known for its harmonious spices and gentle warmth, these Cape Malay dishes will be the perfect foil for the cold winter days that lie ahead.

The exclusive Cape Malay menu will spice things up every Saturday lunchtime in May: the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th – and bookings are now open!

Delheim Executive Chef Bruce von Pressentin doing some meticulous plating and erm…presentation:-)

“Cape Malay cuisine is such an important part of the Western Cape culture,” says Delheim chef Bruce von Pressentin. “It reaches into a history that is tied to wonderfully descriptive language, and its traditions of food, conviviality and hospitality that have been passed down for many years are often overlooked.

“Without it, we would not have the vibrant and diverse food culture that we do celebrate. Our Cape Malay menu at Delheim is an abundant celebration of these aromatic, heart-warming dishes.”

tale friends deheim cape malay sonia cabano blog eatdrinkcapetown
Get some friends together and book a table for Delheim’s Cape Malay May Lunches! Only R300 pp for an epic feast.

The culinary journey along this heady spice route begins with crispy samosas of beef and vegetable; moreish lamb half-moon pastries and sweetly spicy curried yellowtail – or as it is more affectionately known in the Cape, piekelvis. No hearty, traditional meal of this kind is complete without freshly baked bread hot from the oven of course, which will be served on the side with swirls of sweet butter.

Chicken is often used in Cape Malay dishes and features among the mains as fragrant Butter Chicken with mini homemade rotis, spicy sambals and toasted coconut. But that is not all, folks! Add a thick, curried lamb stew or denningsvleis with jasmine rice; pots of festive beef biryani and a richly flavoursome potato-green bean stew – gestoofde aartappel en groenboontjie-bredie.

Then, dessert. Aaah, those wickedly sweet temptations no Cape Malay foodlover can ever say no to. Von Pressentin’s menu serves up sticky koesiesters and boeber – a sweetly milky sago-type pudding, – and the feast finally concludes with a welbeloontjie or small reward – stick bread! This traditional snack, stokbrood, is bread dough wrapped around sticks, simply roasted over the coals and served with lashings of butter and homemade jam.

Delheim’s popular Garden Restaurant has also launched their new à la carte winter menu. For enthusiasts keen to try out the menu – served up with magnificent farm views seven days a week – the offerings are just as tantalising.

Sizzling newcomers on the winter menu include: squid ink spaghetti served with sautéed prawns and tempura Patagonia squid, seasoned with ginger, spring onion, chilli, lime beurre blanc and kombu (seaweed).

Succulent sautéed venison loin rolled in a special Delheim spice blend is served with chimichurri ‘paint’, chorizo, broccoli, crispy potato brunoise, purple carrots, pea micro-sponge and deep-fried kale with a drizzle of venison jus. Extravagant or what?

Desserts reach similar dizzying heights: an exquisite Valrhona Black Forest Chocolate Sphere filled with chocolate ganache cake, sour cherry and vanilla gel, then garnished with macerated cherries, almond crumble and vanilla cream. The stuff dessert dreams are made of!

NOTE: The Cape Malay set menu is available at only R300 pp and booking is essential. Please note that the Cape Malay menu is only available for entire tables.
